Significant progress has been made by specialists on Lot 2 of the A1 motorway between Sibiu and Pitesti. Construction works are currently underway at an intensive pace, including the construction of platforms for four new viaducts, piling works, and concreting activities. At the second viaduct, reinforced concrete crowns have been poured, while earthworks required to reinforce nearby embankments are also ongoing – with work even proceeding on Saturdays. Previously, it was reported that the Turkish contractor (Mapa-Cengiz consortium) is working with 106 workers and 62 machines in a coordinated manner at the first viaduct. The first viaduct is 650 meters long, with almost half (51.83%) completed; currently, the construction of pillars and superstructures is in progress. At the second, 204-meter-long viaduct, pile foundations are being drilled. Construction of platforms and access roads is also taking place at the 3rd, 4th, and 5th viaducts. Across the entire construction area, the execution progress rate is currently 5.02%. The Turkish contractors already began transporting proprietary main girders required for the construction of the Boita viaduct in spring. In total, 1,059 reinforced concrete beams, each ranging between 32.3 and 40 meters in length, will be incorporated across all structures along the entire route. On the 31.33 km Boita–Cornetu section, a total of 48 bridges, overpasses, and viaducts will be built. The value of the execution contract, financed from the 2021–2027 Transport Development Program, is approximately 4.2 billion lei (excluding VAT). The section itself is 31.33 kilometers long and is being executed by the Turkish consortium Mapa Insaat Ve Ticaret AS – Cengiz Insaat Sanayi Ve Ticaret AS. In April of this year, it was announced that contractors are already preparing the fifth viaduct on this segment, leading from Boita to the entrance of the first tunnel. Recently, the first of 96 beams for the Boita viaduct—also manufactured in-house by the contractor—arrived on site. The entire project is advancing at a rapid pace, including work performed on weekends.
According to on-site reports, the number of employees has increased, with foundational works for the viaducts, the construction of abutments and pillars, as well as the reinforcement of slip road ramps now being carried out simultaneously. At the Boita interchange, soil removal is currently in progress. The contractor is allocated a total of 36 months for the execution of the four segments of construction. The 68.04 kilometer-long motorway between Sibiu and Făgăraș will also be realized in several phases: - Section 1: Boita (A1) – Avrig – Mârșa (14.25 km) - Section 2: Avrig – Mârșa – Arpașu de Jos (19.92 km) - Section 3: Arpașu de Jos – Sâmbăta de Sus (17.61 km) - Section 4: Sâmbăta de Sus – Făgăraș (16.26 km) + 5.6 km connecting road to DN1 The fourth phase includes a motorway segment of 16.26 km and a 5.6 km express connecting road, which will join the DN1 road at Făgăraș. On this section, two road interchanges, two bridges (each 160 meters long), and a maintenance base will also be built. The contractor, Makyol Insaat Sanayi Turizm VE Ticaret AS, is planning for a total workforce of around 1,000 employees; a workers' accommodation camp made up of modular buildings has already been completed. Experienced workers can earn a net monthly salary of up to 9,000 lei. The entire 68-kilometer motorway must be completed by the contractors within 4 years, with a total budget of 6.4 billion lei. Construction of service roads for preparatory works has already begun, and in Cârța a construction camp with capacity for around 500 workers has also been established. The Sibiu–Făgăraș motorway will feature seven interchanges and twelve viaducts in total, with the aim of reducing heavy traffic on the DN1 road.
